Currently experts name some trends that are likely to have the greatest impact on the development of global food market. These changes are personal-income growth, urbanization, changes in the demographic situation, increasing consumer demands for quality and food safety. It is expected that Ukraine among other developing countries will play a significant role in the development of global grain markets.
Ukraine has the largest acreage of farmland in Europe with a total of 41.5 million hectares of agricultural land (about 70% of the total area of the country), of which arable land accounts for over 32 million hectares. Ukraine maintains a leading position among major grain suppliers. Over the last ten years, grain exports from Ukraine increased by 77%. In the 2014/2015 marketing year Ukraine supplied to foreign markets the record 35.1 mln MT of grain, accounting for a 9 percent share of total world grain export.
Ukraine is currently the global leader in export of sunflower oil and is among top-10 exporters of following cereals:
№ 3 in the export of сorn (18 million MT)
№ 4 in the export of barley (2.7 million МТ)
6 in the export of wheat (11 million МТ)
№ 7 in the export of soybeans (2 million МТ)*
Ukrainian agrarian sector has a great potential to increase crop production and export volume. The actual figure may well be significantly higher if considerable investment in the sector will be involved.
